Großräschen - Invited Competition, First Prize

Duncan McCauley presented the winning concept for an urban landmark to mark the location of the IBA’s central exhibition site in the Lausitz region of eastern Germany. A central task of the competition was the integration of the IBA’s SEE logo. The spatial form of the design was inspired by both the boldness of the logo and the site’s location at a busy crossroads. The SEE logo was wrapped into three sides of a semitransparent form so as to superimpose the individual letters over each other. To passing viewers the letters appear to shift places, creating a typographical effect that signifies the ongoing transformation of the post-industrial landscape into a new lakelands area.
