Visitor research at the hugely successful Tower of London showed that despite being overall very happy with their experience at the Tower, their expectations with the interpretive elements dealing with the themes of torture and imprisonment were not completely met. Duncan McCauley worked together with the Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) at the School of Museum Studies, University of Leicester and Historic Royal Palaces to investigate ways of creating emotionally engaging experiences that also addressed the ethically challenging aspects of presenting such difficult themes.
